AnishaMunshi

At the June 11, 2020 Board Meeting, Vice President, Anisha Munshi announced her resignation from the Board of Trustees.  Her final day of service to the Board of Education was June 15, 2020.  In a letter to Superintendent Dr. Deborah Flores and the other trustees, Dr. Munshi wrote, “Even though this decision has been precipitated by a combination of absolutely unavoidable and professional situations that I could not have foreseen two years ago, it is still a very hard decision that I have not reached lightly.”

Dr. Munshi’s involvement with the Gilroy Unified School began as a School Site Council parent member and helping with small groups during the reading. She went back to school to earn a teaching credential and Master’s degree in Education, and taught at a local elementary school for several years prior to earning an administrative credential. Dr. Munshi then served as a middle school assistant principal for three years, and principal for five years. Currently, Dr. Munshi is the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel for the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

Dr. Munshi’s resignation from the Board of Education creates a vacancy in Trustee Area 3, according to the newly designated redistricting policy, adopted at the May 7, GUSD Board Meeting.  Board President Mark W. Good proposed an amended resolution at the June 11, 2020 Board Meeting to address the vacancy left by Dr. Munshi’s departure.   “[A] special election for Trustee Area 3, pursuant to Education Code section 5093(b) and Board Bylaw 9223, is additionally ordered, in order to fill the vacancy in Trustee Area 3 until that Trustee Area’s term expires in 2022, and that the aforementioned Special Election [will] be consolidated with the November 3, 2020 General Election.”  There will be four seats on the ballot at the November 3 General Election.  Current GUSD trustees Mark W. Good and BC Doyle have indicated that they will run for reelection in November 2020.  Trustee James Pace has indicated he will not seek reelection in November.

Superintendent Dr. Deborah A. Flores expressed her gratitude to Dr. Munshi for her service to the GUSD school community. “I am grateful for the insight and professionalism that Anisha has contributed to the Board of Education in the last two years.  She brought unique experiences to the Board, as a former GUSD parent, teacher and administrator.  Her goal as a board member was to provide our students with the educational opportunities and experiences that will allow them to learn and grow.  Although I am sad to see her leave the Board, I know her decision is what is best for her and her family.”

The Board of Education reconvenes on August 6, 2020, at the first meeting of the 2020-21 school year.
